Duties Description Radiologic Health Specialists are multidisciplinary positions that involve the application of radiation protection standards in a variety of situations. These positions are involved in inspections of hospitals, medical offices, colleges, and commercial facilities. They work with other State agencies and local communities for emergency response to radiologic events and reviewing hazardous sites for potential health concerns from radiation. There is extensive training provided, both in house and formal coursework at a variety of federal training sites around the country. This position may involve extensive travel around New York State.
Minimum Qualifications NY HELPS Minimum Qualifications:
Radiological Health Specialist Trainee 1 (NS - Grade 13): A qualifying bachelor's degree.*
Radiological Health Specialist Trainee 2 (NS - Grade 14): A qualifying bachelor's degree* AND one year of experience applying specialized knowledge in radiation protection.
Senior Radiological Health Specialist (Grade 18): A qualifying bachelor's degree* AND two years of experience applying specialized knowledge in radiation protection.

A master's degree in a related field can substitute for one year of experience; and a doctorate in a related field can substitute for two years of experience.
Reassignment or Transfer: Current New York State Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent permanent status as a Senior Radiological Health Specialist, Grade 18, or Radiological Health Specialist Trainee; OR current New York State employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent permanent, competitive service in a title eligible to transfer, via 70.1 or 70.4 to a Senior Radiological Health Specialist, Grade 18 or Radiological Health Specialist Trainee.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will be detail-oriented, technologically proficient, and be competent in mathematics. They will also have strong written, and verbal communication skills; excellent organizational skills; be able to work independently on tasks; and demonstrate strong critical thinking skills.

Position may be filled at a trainee level (equated to a 14 or 16) or 18, depending upon the qualifications of the candidate.

This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
