Duties Description The New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) provides operational support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year, supporting more than 4,900 applications for 53 New York State Agencies.

Under the direction of a higher-level Information Technology Architect (Artificial Intelligence), the Information Technology Architect 1 (Artificial Intelligence) will be responsible for providing senior technical leadership within the artificial intelligence (AI) architecture project lifecycle, making decisions regarding the selection and utilization of software tools and platforms. The position will develop and implement integration standards and strategies within the scope of AI systems development.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Develop AI software and oversee the implementation of AI solutions; models, systems, and infrastructure to help drive organizational improvements and technology products.
• Collaborate with IT security to secure AI business data and fix any possible issues.
• Optimize AI applications to ensure that they continue to meet NYS’ needs as they evolve, maintaining the security, scalability, and high availability of the AI environment.
• Work with other IT team members, including data scientists and leaders, to support digital transformation.
• Build AI software and hardware systems that teams, departments, or companies can integrate into existing IT systems.
• Develop new AI-related applications and managing programmers.
• Implement ML models and convert them into application programming interfaces (APIs) for various uses.
• Collaborate with and guide business and IT stakeholders in choosing compatible technologies which meet the organization’s AI needs.
• Collaborate with security professionals to manage potential risks and implement AI technologies, applications, and infrastructure in keeping with ethical policies.
• Implement best practices for AI testing, deployment, and maintenance.
• Manage relationships with AI-related service providers.
• Evaluate performance metrics for all active AI applications, hardware, and software.
• Communicate with NYS agency management and fellow IT team members.
• Report on the efficiency of specific AI applications to IT team leaders, executives, and NYS agency representatives.
• Troubleshoot any issues with specific AI applications, or issues that NYS agencies might have when implementing applications with their existing networks, responding to NYS agency representatives in a professional and timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications EMPLOYMENT:
• Six (6) years of broad information technology (IT) experience, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of software coding and programming languages.
• Four (4) years of specialized experience designing, executing, and supporting artificial intelligence solutions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTIONS:
Earned college degrees in computer or data science, artificial intelligence,
mathematics, or a related field of study may substitute for the specified years of broad IT experience as follows:
• Bachelor's or higher-level degree in any field including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer or data science, artificial intelligence,
mathematics, or related field substitutes for three (3) years of general information technology experience; any bachelor’s substitutes for two (2) years of general information technology experience.
• Associate degree with 15 semester credit hours in computer or data science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, or related field may substitute for one (1) year of general information technology experience. Candidates in a bachelor’s degree program with at least 15 semester credit hours in computer or data science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, or related field may substitute such credits for one (1) year of general information technology experience.
• Master’s degree or higher in computer or data science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, or related field substitutes for one (1) year of general information technology experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Preference for candidates holding relevant AI architecture certification, including but not limited to:
o ARTIBA: Artificial Intelligence Engineer
o AWS Certified Machine Learning - Specialty
o IBM AI Developer Professional Certificate
o IBM AI Engineering Professional Certificate
o Google Advanced Data Analytics Professional Certificate
o Google Professional Machine Learning Engineer Certification
o Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals
o MIT: Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy
o USAII Certified Artificial Intelligence Consultant (CAIC)
o USAII Certified Artificial Intelligence Engineer (CAIE)
• Strong technical background with extensive experience with applied mathematics, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, ML techniques like random forest, neural networks, and natural language processing (NLP).
• Substantial experience working with AI tools like big data (Hadoop, Apache Spark), data science, and advanced analytics tools like SAS.
• Broad understanding of coding and programming languages, including but not limited to Python and R.
• Good understanding of software engineering and DevOps principles, including knowledge of DevOps workflows and tools, such as Git, containers, Kubernetes, and CI/CD.
• Proven ability to lead and manage change projects with cross-functional teams.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential.
• Experience with ethical AI practices and ensuring compliance with data protection regulations.

• Appointment to this position and continued employment with the agency is contingent upon obtaining and/or maintaining New York State residency within six months of hiring.
• Appointment to this position is not final until all agency approvals have been granted.

Positions located in New York City, will receive an additional $4,000 downstate adjustment location pay with regular annual salary. Positions located in the Mid-Hudson will receive an additional $2,000 adjustment location pay.
