Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Cleaner position at the New York State School for the Deaf. Duties of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Wash floors, corridors, stairwells, walls, partitions, and windows from the inside and outside;
• Clean and scrub all areas of lavatories and locker rooms, such as sinks, urinals, toilets, showers, and drains;
• Move furniture and equipment in connection with cleaning activities, and set up for meetings or special events;
• Empty trash, recyclables, and waste, in accordance with cleaning schedule;
• Remove snow and salt walkways, clean sidewalks
• Strip and wax floors;
• Vacuum and shampoo carpets;
• Dust assigned areas; and
• Provide coverage of alternate Cleaner shifts on an as-needed basis.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Cleaner.
Labor-class Appointment: There are no education or experience requirements for this title. Candidates must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor as well as speak and understand English and carry out written or oral instructions.
It is essential that candidates clearly and concisely indicate exactly how they meet the above minimum qualifications in their resume. Failure to show how you meet the minimum qualifications above may result in disqualification and removal from consideration.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference may be given to applicants who have:
• Experience working with deaf students; and
• The ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a permanent labor-class 12-month appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Fees associated with fingerprinting do not apply if applicant’s fingerprints exist in the NYS TEACH System. The work schedule for this position includes hours of Monday through Friday, 12:00pm – 8:30pm which includes a half hour unpaid lunch period. The incumbent of this positions may be required to cover alternative shifts on an as needed basis, depending on the needs of the facility.
This position leads to a maximum salary of $42,565 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts
