Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for 3 Education Specialist positions. These Education Specialists act as Health Care Staff in the New York State Summer School of the Arts. Established in 1970, the New York State Summer School of the Arts Program has trained over 20,000 students since its inception. The in-residency NYSSSA Program offers an immersive summer experience for high school artists. In 2025, 145 students will be attending NYSSSA across three programs- Visual Arts, Media Arts, and Theatre. The 4-week summer program will take place at SUNY Fredonia and delivers robust pre-professional training, personalized coaching, and leadership development to qualified students across the state. Must be available July 1, 2025-August 3, 2025. Preferential consideration will be given to candidates who are available for the entirety of the NYSSSA program from July 1-August 3, 2025
In this intensive program, students immerse themselves in their chosen artistic discipline, dedicating up 7-12 hours a day for 5-6 days a week. The teaching staff is comprised of accomplished professional artists, companies, college professors, and teachers who impart their skills, knowledge, and enthusiasm to the future artistic talent of New York's high schools.
Health Care staff must be a NYS certified RN, PA or MD. Health Care staff are responsible for the health and wellbeing of both staff and students on a 24-hour basis. During the month, the Health Care staff oversee 145 students at the program. Mental Health counseling experience a plus.
Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Distributes and monitors student medications;
• Maintain records of all medications, injuries, accidents;
• Work with Assistant Director of Administration, Directors of Administration, and Counselor staff to transport students as needed to and from local urgent care, emergency rooms, doctor offices and field trip locations;
• Meets student's parents/guardians during check-in to review medical forms;
• Assist Residential Life staff with student homesickness;
• Evaluate student's ability to stay at NYSSSA when issues arise such as homesickness, mental health concerns, inability to follow rules, and medication complications;
• Maintain NYSSSA infirmary and prepare accident and illness reports; and
• On call 24/7 while NYSSSA is in session to accompany sick or injured students to the hospital or urgent care.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must be NYS certified RN, PA or MD.
Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and be at least 21 years old.
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates with Mental Health counseling experience.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a temporary appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Due to the residential nature of the program, all staff must live on-site. Room and board are provided to all staff members. Filling of this position is contingent upon Division of the Budget approval.
